Which Witch Dies In Wizard Of Oz

Ah, the Wizard of Oz. A classic, right? We all know the story. Dorothy, Toto, a magical land, a quest for home. And, of course, some seriously memorable characters.
But let's get real for a second. While everyone talks about Dorothy's journey, there's a little detail that often gets glossed over. It's a question that tickles my brain every time I watch it.
It's about the witches. You know, the ones with the pointy hats and the cackles. The ones who are, shall we say, not exactly the friendliest folks around.
We meet two of them pretty early on. The Wicked Witch of the East. And the Good Witch of the North. One is definitely more "wicked" than the other, obviously.
So, who bites the dust? Who meets their maker in the land of Oz? It seems pretty straightforward, doesn't it? One of them is, well, squished. Quite spectacularly, if I may add.
But here's where things get a little fuzzy. Or maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm overthinking it. My brain just likes to play detective with these things.
Let's talk about the Wicked Witch of the East first. She's the one wearing those fabulous ruby slippers. They're quite the statement piece, aren't they?
Dorothy's little house, after a bit of a bumpy landing, lands right on top of her. Boom. Instant flattened witch. Pretty dramatic exit, if you ask me.
So, by all accounts, the Wicked Witch of the East is dead. Kaput. Gone. She's the first witch we see meet a very sticky end. Literally.
Then there's her sister. The one with the green skin and the fierce temper. The infamous Wicked Witch of the West. She's the one who really causes Dorothy a lot of trouble.

She's got flying monkeys. She's got a crystal ball. She's got a serious vendetta against anyone who messes with her sister's belongings. Especially those ruby slippers.
Dorothy, in a moment of pure, unadulterated rage, throws a bucket of water at her. And what happens? She melts.
Like a snowman in July. A green, very angry snowman. It's another pretty definitive end for a witch.
So, we've got two witches down. The East and the West. Both undeniably dead and gone. Case closed, right?
But wait. What about the other witches? The ones who aren't quite so...wicked?
We have the Good Witch of the North. She's the one who greets Dorothy and gives her the ruby slippers. She seems nice. A bit fluttery, maybe. But nice.
She doesn't get squished. She doesn't melt. She just kind of...disappears. Or at least, we don't see her again after the initial welcome.

And then there's the Wicked Witch of the South. Now, this is where my brain starts to really get going. Did you even know there was a Wicked Witch of the South?
She's not explicitly shown in the movie. Not like her sisters. But she's mentioned. She's part of the whole witch hierarchy in Oz.
If the East and the West are gone, and the North is, well, elsewhere, what happens to the South? Does she just carry on, business as usual?
This is where my "unpopular opinion" kicks in. It's a little theory I've cooked up. A thought experiment, if you will.
What if the story is a little more nuanced? What if the deaths aren't quite as clear-cut as they seem?
Think about it. The Wicked Witch of the East is dead. No doubt. The ruby slippers are free. The munchkins are happy.
The Wicked Witch of the West is dead. Melted. Her reign of terror is over. The flying monkeys are probably off looking for a new gig.
But the Good Witch of the North? She gives Dorothy the slippers and then...poof. Where does she go? Is she just hanging out in her castle, knitting?

And the Wicked Witch of the South? Is she just chilling, waiting for her sisters to return? Or is she secretly pulling strings from afar?
Here's my wild idea. My slightly silly, but totally entertaining thought. What if... what if the Good Witch of the North isn't entirely good?
Hear me out. She seems very eager to get rid of those ruby slippers. She practically shoves them onto Dorothy's feet. And then she disappears.
What if her "goodness" was just a temporary guise? What if, by getting rid of the East and the West, she's actually consolidating her own power?
It's a bit like a political shake-up in Oz. The two most powerful witches are eliminated, and the remaining one is left to reign. Or maybe even take over the East and West's territories.
And what about the Wicked Witch of the South? Maybe she's just observing. Waiting for the dust to settle. Or maybe she's in cahoots with the Good Witch.
It's a conspiracy theory, of sorts. A lighthearted one, of course. We're not talking about anything truly sinister here. Just a fun little twist.

So, technically, yes, the Wicked Witch of the East dies. And the Wicked Witch of the West dies. Those are pretty clear-cut.
But the question that keeps me entertained is: who really wins in the end? Who benefits the most from all this witch-related attrition?
My money is on the subtly powerful. The ones who don't make a big show of their actions.
So, the next time you watch The Wizard of Oz, pay a little extra attention. Look at the Good Witch of the North. Is she really just sweet and helpful? Or is there a touch of the strategic behind those twinkling eyes?
And the Wicked Witch of the South? She's the ghost in the machine. The unseen player. The one we never quite get to know.
It's a playful thought, of course. But it adds a fun layer to the whole tale, don't you think? A little mystery for a classic story.
Ultimately, the Wicked Witch of the East is squished, and the Wicked Witch of the West melts. Those are the definitive witch deaths. But my mind just likes to ponder the possibilities.
The Wizard of Oz is full of magic and wonder. And sometimes, it's the little, unasked questions that bring the most joy. So, here's to the witches, the living, the dead, and the potentially scheming!
