You know, like that uncle who tells the same story every Thanksgiving but you still secretly love hearing it? That’s Jay. And then there’s his fabulous wife, Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, brought to life with such vibrant energy by Sofia Vergara. Gloria is a force of nature! She’s got that amazing accent that just makes everything sound ten times more exciting, a heart bigger than Texas, and a flair for the dramatic that can either leave you in stitches or slightly terrified. She’s the spicy salsa to Jay’s plain potato salad, and their marriage is a testament to the fact that opposites really do attract, especially when one of them can flip a table with surprising ease.

And who could forget Gloria’s son, the adorable, often bewildered, Manny Delgado, played by the incredibly talented Rico Rodriguez? Manny is a poet, a dreamer, a young man who’s wise beyond his years and loves a good cup of coffee (or, you know, whatever sophisticated beverage he’s concocted that week). He’s the kid who probably wrote sonnets about his school lunch while everyone else was doodling dinosaurs. Moving on to Jay’s daughter, the always-organized, slightly-uptight, yet deeply loving Claire Dunphy, portrayed by the brilliant Julie Bowen. Claire is the queen of the to-do list, the master of contingency plans, and the mom who probably has a color-coded emergency kit for every conceivable scenario. She’s the mom who’s trying her absolute best to keep it all together, even when her family seems determined to unravel the very fabric of her perfectly planned existence. She’s us, trying to juggle work, kids, and the never-ending quest for a clean house. Ty Burrell as her husband, Phil Dunphy, is quite simply a national treasure. Phil is the ultimate cool dad, the eternal optimist, and the king of the cheesy joke. He’s the guy who’s always armed with a dad pun, a questionable magic trick, and an unwavering belief in his own awesomeness. He’s the goofy, loving husband who’s always trying to be the hero, even if his heroic endeavors usually involve awkward dance moves or a misfired golf club. Think of him as that friend who’s always up for anything, even if "anything" involves a questionable Hawaiian shirt and a spontaneous trip to Vegas.

And then there are the Dunphy kids, a magnificent trio of chaos. First up, the eldest, the ever-so-popular (in her own mind, at least) Haley Dunphy, played by the effortlessly cool Sarah Hyland. Haley is the fashionista, the social butterfly, the one who’s always on the cutting edge of trends, whether they’re good or questionable. She’s the sister who might borrow your clothes without asking but would also defend you to the death. She’s that friend we all have who’s always got the latest scoop and the most daring outfit. Next, the middle child, the quirky and intelligent Alex Dunphy, brought to life by the amazing Ariel Winter. Alex is the brains of the operation, the one who’s probably got her nose buried in a textbook or a science experiment even when she’s supposed to be relaxing. She’s the sister who will patiently (or sometimes impatiently) explain complex scientific theories to you, even if you just wanted to know if there was any pizza left. She’s the reminder that smart is indeed incredibly cool. And finally, the youngest, the lovable goofball Luke Dunphy, played by the wonderfully silly Nolan Gould. Luke is… well, Luke is Luke. He’s the kid who’s always getting into some sort of improbable adventure, often with a vacant stare and a surprisingly insightful (albeit accidental) observation. He’s the pure, unadulterated id of the family, the embodiment of youthful exuberance and a complete lack of self-awareness, which, let’s be honest, is a superpower in itself.

Last but certainly not least, we have the other half of Jay’s household, his son Mitchell Pritchett, played by the hilariously deadpan Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and his husband Cameron Tucker, brought to life with an equally impressive amount of theatrical flair by Eric Stonestreet. Mitch and Cam are the heart and soul of a different kind of family, a partnership built on love, compromise, and an endless supply of dramatic entrances and exits. Mitch is the more reserved, slightly anxious lawyer, the perfect foil to Cam’s flamboyant and passionate personality. Cam is the former football star turned drama teacher, a man who can go from zero to sixty in a single dramatic sigh or a booming declaration of love. Their relationship is a masterclass in how two very different people can create a beautiful, loving, and often hilarious life together. And of course, we can’t forget their equally dramatic and darling daughter, Lily Tucker-Pritchett, played by the incredibly talented Aubrey Anderson-Emmons (and earlier by twins Ella and Jaden Hiller). Lily has the uncanny ability to deliver cutting one-liners with the most innocent of expressions, a skill that only grows as she does.

The beauty of the Modern Family cast is that they felt like real people. They stumbled, they argued, they embarrassed each other, but at the end of the day, they always had each other’s backs.
