Show Hidden Lines Solidworks Drawing

Ah, the humble SolidWorks drawing. A place where lines go to retire. We’ve all been there, right? Staring at a drawing, a beautiful, meticulously crafted 3D model reduced to a 2D blueprint. It’s supposed to be clear. It’s supposed to be helpful. But sometimes, it feels more like a game of 3D “Where’s Waldo?”

But in the 2D drawing world, they pop out like a jack-in-the-box. SolidWorks, bless its logical heart, insists on showing them. It’s like your mom telling you to wear a coat because it might be cold later, even though it’s currently 80 degrees and sunny.
Now, I’m going to say something a little… controversial. Something that might make my fellow CAD jockeys clutch their pearls. I think, sometimes, we don’t actually need all those hidden lines. Gasp! I know. It’s an unpopular opinion. But hear me out!
Sometimes, those dashed lines are less helpful and more… noisy.
Think about it. You’ve got a perfectly clear view of the main features. The big stuff. The important stuff. The stuff that actually matters to the person who’s going to build this thing. And then, BAM! A swarm of dashed lines, crisscrossing and overlapping, making you squint and wonder if you’ve accidentally opened a blueprint for a particularly complex plate of spaghetti.

SolidWorks is, of course, a brilliant tool. It’s designed to show you everything. It’s thorough. It’s comprehensive. It’s the overachiever of the CAD world. And that’s great, usually. But in the realm of drawing views, sometimes less is more. Imagine you’re trying to explain a simple chair to someone. You show them the legs, the seat, the back. Clear as day. Then, SolidWorks pipes up and says, “But wait! You can’t see the screws holding the legs on from this angle! Let’s add some dashed lines to show where those are!” And suddenly, your simple chair drawing looks like it’s tangled in a web of invisible fishing line.
It’s like trying to have a conversation in a crowded room. You can hear the main speaker, but then there’s a cacophony of background chatter. The hidden lines are the background chatter. They’re there, they’re making noise, and they’re potentially drowning out the important message. We want our drawings to be as clear as a perfectly polished glass of water, not a murky pond.
And let’s be honest, sometimes those hidden lines are just… redundant. They show you something you can already figure out. It’s like being told, “The sky is blue!” when you’re standing outside on a sunny day. Thanks, but I’ve got eyes. Similarly, if a feature is obvious from the visible lines, do we really need a ghostly echo of it peeking out from behind?

I’m not saying we should banish hidden lines to the digital abyss. Of course not. There are plenty of situations where they are absolutely essential. When they clarify a complex internal feature, or when they’re crucial for understanding how parts assemble, then by all means, let them dance! They’re the unsung heroes of certain views. But for the everyday, “here’s what this looks like” views, perhaps we can give them a little… vacation.
It’s about making our drawings work for us, not making us work for our drawings. We spend ages building these intricate 3D models. They’re masterpieces of engineering. And then we present them in a 2D format that can sometimes feel like a puzzle designed by a particularly mischievous elf. The goal is to communicate effectively, to make things easy to understand. And sometimes, that means strategically hiding the things that are already hidden.

So, the next time you’re in SolidWorks, wrestling with a drawing, take a peek at those hidden lines. Ask yourself: are they truly helping? Or are they just adding to the visual clutter? Perhaps, just perhaps, you might discover that a little less dashedness can lead to a lot more clarity. And in the world of technical drawings, clarity is king. Or queen. Or whatever majestic ruler you prefer.
