Ah, 10 Things I Hate About You. Even just reading that title probably brings a smile to your face, right? It's one of those movies that just feels good. It’s got that perfect blend of smart humor, a bit of romance, and a whole lot of heart. And at the center of it all, causing all sorts of delightful chaos, is our main man, Patrick Verona.
Now, Patrick, played by the endlessly charming Heath Ledger, isn't your typical movie hero. He’s not the quarterback of the football team, he’s not the brainy kid who’s always got the answer. He's… well, he’s kind of a mystery. He’s the new kid, the one with the cool leather jacket and the smirk that could melt glaciers. He shows up at Padua High, and suddenly, everything starts to get a whole lot more interesting.
The whole premise of the movie is pretty wild, and it all revolves around the Stratford sisters. You’ve got the older sister, Kat Stratford, who is, let’s be honest, a force of nature. She’s fiercely independent, incredibly smart, and not afraid to tell anyone exactly what she thinks. Her dad, a doctor with a seriously overprotective streak, has a rule: Kat has to have a date before her younger sister, Bianca, can even think about dating. And since Bianca is popular and everyone wants to date her, this is a major problem. Enter Cameron James, the sweet, shy new guy who’s totally smitten with Bianca. He needs a plan, and that plan involves a certain wild card.
Cameron, along with his best friend Michael, cooks up a scheme to pay Patrick to take Kat out on a date. Why would anyone pay for that? Because Kat is intimidating. She’s intimidating to boys, she’s intimidating to teachers, she’s even intimidating to the cheerleaders. She’s got this amazing, unapologetic spirit. And Patrick? He’s willing to take on the challenge.
What’s so great about Patrick is that he’s not just some goon hired to distract Kat. He’s actually got a brain and a heart under all that cool exterior. He’s a bit of an outsider himself, which is probably why he’s drawn to Kat’s rebellious nature. He doesn't try to change her; he actually seems to… get her. And that’s a big deal, especially when Kat’s so determined to keep everyone at arm’s length.
One of the most iconic scenes, of course, is Patrick serenading Kat on the bleachers. Remember that? He bursts out onto the football field, singing "Can't Take My Eyes Off You", and he’s got a whole crowd of people singing along. It’s so grand, so over-the-top, and yet, it feels so genuine. It’s Patrick showing Kat, and everyone else, that he’s not afraid to be bold, and that he’s seriously smitten. For someone who’s supposed to be doing this for money, he sure seems to be falling for her hard.
"I hate the way you talk to me, and the way you cut your hair. I hate the way you drive my car. I hate it when you stare. I hate your big dumb combat boots, and the way you read. I hate you so much it makes me sick. It even makes me rhyme. I hate the way you're always right. I hate it when you lie. I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry. I hate it when you're not around, and the fact that you didn't call. But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all."
That’s Kat’s poem, right? And it’s brilliant. It’s the perfect example of how she expresses her feelings, even when she’s trying not to. And Patrick is the only one who can make her feel all those things, the good and the bad. He sees past her tough exterior to the vulnerable person underneath, and he’s not scared off by it. He’s drawn to her fire.
There are so many funny moments with Patrick. Like when he’s trying to impress Kat’s dad, or when he’s getting into scrapes because he’s trying to be the bad boy to impress Kat. He’s got this amazing ability to be both cool and a little bit goofy, which is probably why we all fell for him. He’s not perfect, and that’s what makes him so relatable and so lovable.
And then there’s the whole situation where he pretends to be some tough guy, which, of course, blows up in his face. But even then, he handles it with a certain grace. He’s not a malicious person; he’s just a guy who’s trying his best to navigate a complicated situation, and doing it all while falling for one of the most unforgettable characters in teen movie history. He’s the perfect foil to Kat’s intensity, bringing out her softer side and showing her that maybe, just maybe, letting someone in isn’t such a bad thing after all.
Ultimately, Patrick Verona is the guy who proves that sometimes, the bad boys are actually the good guys in disguise. He’s got that spark, that charisma, and that underlying kindness that makes him an absolute standout. He’s the reason Kat, and a lot of us watching at home, started to believe in fairy tales, even if they come with a few unexpected plot twists and a whole lot of witty banter.
