How Old Is Will In Stranger Things

Oh, Will Byers! Our favorite perpetually anxious, surprisingly resilient kid from Hawkins. We’ve been through so much with him, haven't we? From being snatched by a Demogorgon to battling the Mind Flayer (twice!), Will has had a wild ride. And through it all, we’ve been right there with him, shouting advice at the TV and clutching our popcorn. But one question, a question that’s probably crossed your mind more times than you’ve rewatched that iconic Stranger Things scene with Kate Bush, is just how old is our boy Will, anyway?
It’s a surprisingly tricky question, like trying to nail down the exact number of Eggos he ate in Season 1. You’d think it would be simple, right? He’s a kid, he’s going to school, he has friends. But the show’s timeline can feel as bendy as the Upside Down itself sometimes! Let’s break it down, and hopefully, by the end, you'll feel like you've got a better handle on Will’s age than the entire Hawkins PD has on what’s really going on.
When we first met Will Byers in Season 1, he was the tender age of 12. Yep, just a little dude, probably worried more about his D&D dice rolls than any interdimensional monsters. He was the youngest of the core group, the one you’d expect to be trailing slightly behind on their epic adventures. He was the guy whose disappearance kicked off the whole dang thing, and honestly, the relief when he was found was so huge, you could have probably felt it in Australia. Remember that scene where Joyce finds him? Chills, right? He was our little lost lamb, and we were all so glad he was back, even if he was a little… twitchy.
Then came Season 2. Ah, Season 2. Poor Will was still dealing with the fallout from his time in the Upside Down. He was physically back, but mentally? Let’s just say he was experiencing some major PTSD. In Season 2, Will is still 12 for most of it. The season takes place about a year after the events of Season 1, so you’d think he’d have had a birthday. But the show is sneaky like that! He technically turns 13 towards the end of Season 2. It’s a big birthday, the one where you officially become a teenager, and for Will, it was… complicated. He was like, “Yay, I can drive soon!” while simultaneously being a walking, talking portal to the Upside Down. Talk about a birthday bummer!
Fast forward to Season 3. This is where things get a little more concrete. Season 3 kicks off in the summer of 1985, and by this point, Will has definitely celebrated his 13th birthday. He’s officially a teenager, grappling with all the awkwardness that comes with it, plus the added bonus of a mind-controlling entity trying to take over his brain again. Classic Will, am I right? He’s still the youngest of the main four boys, but he’s starting to feel the pressure of growing up, wanting to be taken more seriously, especially by his older brother, Jonathan. It’s that age-old struggle: you want to be a kid, but you also want to be cool and adult-like. Poor Will just can’t catch a break.

Now, Season 4. This is where our little Will has really grown up. Season 4 takes place roughly eight months after the Battle of Starcourt. If he was 13 at the start of Season 3 and it was the summer of '85, then by the time Season 4 rolls around in spring 1986, Will has turned 14. He’s in his mid-teens now, still dealing with the lingering trauma, and trying to navigate a new school and new friendships in California. He’s gone from being the kid who gets taken to being the kid who wants to protect his friends. It’s a huge shift, and you can see it in his quiet determination. He’s not just the victim anymore; he’s a survivor, and a really brave one at that.
So, to recap: Will Byers started out at a sprightly 12, celebrated a somewhat terrifying 13th birthday while still being haunted by monsters, and is now a (slightly) more mature 14-year-old navigating the complexities of adolescence and interdimensional threats. It’s a lot for anyone to handle, let alone a kid who just wanted to play some D&D and listen to his favorite music. But that’s our Will for you. Always there, always fighting, and always, always a little bit worried. And we wouldn't have him any other way!

Think about it! If you were 12 and got kidnapped by a monster from another dimension, would you ever feel quite right again? We'd all be jumping at shadows and hoarding flashlights. Will is basically a superhero in disguise, and his superpower is enduring the absolute worst and still showing up for his friends. That’s the stuff of legends, people!
And as he embarks on whatever epic journey awaits him in Season 5, we’ll be right here, cheering him on. Because no matter his age, Will Byers will always be our brave, resilient, and occasionally very stressed-out hero. He’s the heart of Stranger Things, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for him. Go, Will, go!
