Back To The Future Musical San Diego
Okay, so have you heard the buzz? The Back to the Future musical. In San Diego, of all places! My first thought was, "Wait, a musical? About time travel and hoverboards?" It sounds a little… out there. Like putting a poodle in a tuxedo. Not necessarily bad, just… unexpected.
I mean, we all love Back to the Future, right? The original movies are iconic. Marty McFly, the DeLorean, Doc Brown and his wild hair. It’s pure, unadulterated fun. So the idea of turning that into a song and dance routine feels a bit like adding sprinkles to a perfectly good pizza. Why mess with perfection?
And a musical? My brain immediately conjures up images. Is Marty going to be belting out his feelings while trying to avoid erasing himself from existence? Will the entire town of Hill Valley spontaneously burst into a choreographed number every time the DeLorean hits 88 miles per hour? I’m picturing a lot of dramatic lighting and maybe some fog machines. Lots and lots of fog machines.
My inner cynic is whispering, "This is going to be weird." And maybe it will be. Maybe it will be gloriously, spectacularly weird. Like a unicorn wearing roller skates. You might not have seen it coming, but you can’t deny the spectacle. And let's be honest, sometimes the weirdest things are the most entertaining.

Think about it. They have to somehow translate the thrill of a car chase into a song. How do you make a DeLorean a captivating dancer? Does it have little robotic arms that flail with the beat? Or is it just going to hover ominously while someone sings about flux capacitors? The possibilities are both exciting and terrifying. I’m leaning towards terrifyingly exciting.
And what about the songs themselves? Are they going to be about saving the future? Or perhaps a heartfelt ballad from Biff Tannen about his unwavering belief in himself? Imagine a catchy tune about getting your parents together. That’s got to be a tricky lyrical tightrope to walk. "Oh, Mom and Dad, you're so awkward, please fall in love before I disappear!" It’s a recipe for some seriously interesting melodies.
Then there’s the whole visual aspect. The 1950s setting. The music. The outfits. They’ll have to nail the aesthetic. I hope they don’t just slap some poodle skirts on people and call it a day. I’m hoping for authentic, toe-tapping, hand-jiving goodness. And of course, the DeLorean. It has to be a star in its own right. Will it have strobe lights? Will it smoke? Will it defy gravity in a way that makes us all question physics… again?
My brain is running wild with potential musical numbers. A rousing ensemble piece for the whole town of Hill Valley when they realize Marty’s back. A tender duet between Marty and Jennifer, perhaps about the challenges of long-distance, time-traveling relationships. And a show-stopping villain song for Biff, complete with a menacing laugh that’s just a little bit off-key for comedic effect.
And then there’s the obvious question: will it be good? This is the million-dollar question, isn't it? My gut feeling is that it could go one of two ways. It could be a glorious, hilarious, and surprisingly touching tribute to a beloved film. Or it could be a cringeworthy disaster, a pale imitation that makes you want to travel back in time yourself to stop it from ever happening. I’m holding out hope for the former, but I’m not entirely ruling out the latter.
But you know what? Even if it’s a bit silly, even if it’s a little bit bizarre, I’m kind of intrigued. The idea of seeing these iconic characters sing and dance their way through the plot is so wonderfully absurd, it’s almost charming. It’s like a dare. Can they pull it off? Can they make us believe in a musical Back to the Future? I’m not sure they can, but I’m really, really curious to find out.
So, yes, Back to the Future: The Musical in San Diego. It’s a concept that makes me tilt my head and raise an eyebrow. It’s an idea that might sound like a joke. But hey, sometimes the wildest ideas turn out to be the most fun. And if anyone can make time travel musical, it’s probably Doc Brown. Or maybe not. We’ll have to see!
